17 Feb Wired for Growth: How to Enact Change in Your Environment
“But now, oh Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hands” (Isaiah 64:8 ESV). Human beings are wired for growth. God continually molds and shapes us, as though we are clay in His hands. We have the choice, however, to lean into that change or to try and reject it.
Many of us live and die in a non-growth environment. There are small steps you can take to ensure this isn’t your story. I believe that God wants to encourage you today— growth and change are a part of a life with Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: old has gone, the new is here!”
You might say, “Well, Billy, I don’t feel new at all. That verse must have expired on me.”
Nope! According to 2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV), this new creation is a continual process in the life of the believer: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”
Because truth is layered, I believe that this has implications for you no matter your situation. Maybe you want to become more disciplined in your daily routine. Maybe you ache to have more fruitful friendships. Maybe you want to build wealth but don’t believe that you have what it takes. Maybe you’re on your 20th investment property but feel stuck in some capacity.
Change Your Environment
Sometimes God asks us to change our physical environment so that He can work on our mental environment. Is the Holy Spirit nudging you to physically move, either in a small or big way?
Abraham is a perfect example of this. The Lord told him that he had to leave his country and go to a new land where he would become a great nation (Genesis 12). For Abraham to experience the promise God gave him, he had to leave his present environment and step in faith where he could grow and flourish. God understood that Abraham’s environment was critical to his belief system. He knew that when Abraham changed environments, his hindering beliefs would be challenged and defeated.
God promised Abraham a child even though he and his wife were very old (Genesis 15). He started to doubt, and God knew that Abraham needed to move once again in order to set his sights on the promise. This time it was a minor move. He asked Abraham to go outside and look at the stars.
“I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring, all nations on earth will be blessed,” God said to Abraham. (Genesis 26:4 NIV)
Change Your Mentality
When people don’t ask the right questions about money and wealth, they often stay in mentalities that aren’t wired for growth. God may not be asking you to move at the moment physically, but if you want to change, you might want to start asking some questions.
Is there something that you desperately want to change that seems impossible at the moment? If you want change, you have to ask the right questions. Why questions will leave you stuck in the wrong beliefs. What questions will show you the way out and set you on the track toward growth. When you ask yourself those questions, you will find out what you really believe.
In those areas, ask yourself, “What is it about what I’m doing that brought me to this point?” When you reach a conclusion to that question, keep moving forward, “What is it about that point that makes it this way?” If you continue this process, you will eventually get to a root cause with practical solutions.
The right questions are powerful. Think about it— when you ask a question with the faith that there is a solution to better some reality in your life, that’s hope. And God works with hope. Ask the Holy Spirit for questions you can ask to enact change in your life.
