Giving to others is a foundational piece of my belief system. We can often forget to give back to ourselves, though. Self-care is one of the most important things we can do. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Today, I want to encourage you to give back to yourself this holiday season, and see how others benefit from that! You can be a better parent when you are more relaxed, a better spouse when you are happier, and a better friend when you are present and attentive. All of those happen when you focus on being relaxed, happy and present. Here are some ideas to take care of yourself.
Give Yourself Relaxation
It is easy to get stressed nowadays, so it’s important to relax! Set an appointment for a massage, a spa day, or even just a day to relax at home. Don’t do chores or anything that feels like a chore. You could ask someone to watch the kids, or plan a date night with your spouse! If you have the time and resources, plan a weekend getaway. When you are less stressed, you have more grace to give everyone.
Give Yourself Joy
Things that make each of us happy are different for everyone. I really enjoy fly fishing, so that’s what I do if I need to add some joy to my life.I also love spending time with my grandkids. They never fail to make me smile and laugh. We can get so wrapped up in the stressors of “adult” life, like business, finances etc. When we spend time with kids, we begin to see the wonder of the world like they do. Whatever gives you joy, take some time to do that this month.
Give Yourself Presence
Technology makes us accessible to others 24/7, and the whole world is accessible to us. Do you find yourself scrolling through Facebook at dinner time, or listening to the news while spending time with family? I’m sure you do because we all do it. You’re not being fully present where you are, and if you’re like me, you can get overwhelmed with the amount of information in front of you. Take some time to disconnect, and give your mind a break. It is important to relax your mind as much as it is for your body.
I hope you take some time today to give back to yourself this month. I encourage you to make self-care a habit so that you can pour into others well. What self-care routine do you have? Let me know in the comments below.
In this month of Giving, we are asking our followers to consider partnering with us. Our mission is “making sense of making money for making a difference”, and we want you to be apart of it! We are changing lives all over the globe. In fact, the first quarter of 2018 involves one international trip every month for me! I will be spreading the message, teaching others to steward their finances well, and helping people achieve their goals. WealthBuilders is only able to do this because of the generosity of our partners. Join the movement! We appreciate you all.
I started doing group fitness classes at our local gym. I took a leap of faith and started cycling and strength classes last year. I have gotten a lot stronger in one year, not just physically but mentally it has helped me in many areas of my life. I feel better and have more stamina for my job too! I have also met new people and God continues to bless my time and efforts! It is definitely my place to destress and get rejuvenated! So thankful I took a step and conquered the fear of working out with others!!
Thank you for sharing Lisa- that is so great to hear! Exercise is such a great way to take care of ourselves. Keep it up and God bless you!
I have not been doing this for a while but this article has reminded me to resume my weekly practice. Once a week on Sunday evenings, I go to a local restaurant/cafe with my diary, notebook and a book to read. I spend at least two hours reading, eating something and just thinking about the week ahead. I write my to do lists in the diary as well. After that I walk to the taxi stage, get into a taxi and go back home. I am a better woman, wife and mother after this. It relaxes me. Thanks for the article Billy. I am from Kampala, Uganda. Please come by soon.
Thank you for your comment, Doreen! I’m so happy to hear that my blog inspired you to get back into this habit! Taking time for ourselves is not only good for us, but for our relationships with others and it is great to hear that you are doing that. God bless you!
