Basic Struggles in Leadership
- Being promoted to mid or senior level management at a young age.
- Initial naivety and a desire to make the world right for everyone, causing frustration.
- A leader’s role is to help employees get what they are working for, whether it is promotion or job satisfaction.
Understanding Employee Needs and Promotions
- Help employees get promotions to free up spaces for new hires and to send out ambassadors for your organization.
- The “sweet spot” is determining when people are prepared to be promoted—not too early or too late.
- The Peter Principle is when people are promoted to their level of incompetence.
- It’s important to identify and support employees in their sweet spot.
- Tough conversations with employees who are not performing well are necessary and it’s important to do it in a loving and straightforward manner.
Handling Employee Performance Issues
- When an employee’s performance and attendance decline, a tough conversation is required.
- Involve a mid level manager in the conversation to ensure it is not seen as disciplinary action.
- The goal is for the employee to respond positively, and express a desire for help (employee assistance program).
Developing and Mentoring Employees
- Schedule periodic conversations with employees to understand their current season and future aspirations.
- Mentor people to take over your job, providing them with opportunities to stretch and grow.
- Be honest with employees about their readiness for promotions and provide them with the necessary skills and opportunities to advance.
Advice for Aspiring Leaders
- Handle with care situations where employees think they are ready for promotions but are not.
- Be receptive to employees’ aspirations and honest about their readiness, while also providing opportunities for them to learn and grow.
- Have straightforward conversations with employees and allow them to fail in a teachable manner.
- Share big changes with employees as soon as possible to help them understand and prepare for what’s coming.
- At some point a leader will need to let someone go.
- Being straightforward, fair and firm on an employee will generally be appreciated.
- Treat employees with respect and fairness, even in tough situations.
