Money is a tool that you trade for commodities and services you value. So, whether you know it or not, how you spend your money reflects what you care about the most. That’s why aligning your budget and investments with your belief system is crucial. If you don’t assign a purpose to your money, you will waste it.
This blog will outline how to create your own wealth building vision. You will learn how to make a generational wealth plan that aligns with your purpose and priorities!
What is a Wealth Building Vision?
A wealth-building vision is a clear statement of what you want to achieve with your finances. It answers the essential “why” behind your efforts to build wealth, serving as your compass for every financial decision you make. When you have a vision, you know where you’re heading, and you can make strategic choices that align with your long-term goals.
Here are some examples of what a wealth-building vision could look like:
- Debt-Free Living: “I will get out of debt to take control of my money and begin building wealth.”
- Faithful Stewardship: “I will be the best steward of my financial resources to glorify God and provide opportunities for my family.”
- Real Estate Legacy: “I will build an investment real estate portfolio to bless others with hospitable spaces and leave a lasting legacy.”
- Generous Giving: “I will build wealth through my business so I can live off 10% of my income and give away 90%.”
Each of these visions is specific, purposeful, and values-driven. They provide a roadmap for wealth-building that goes beyond just accumulating money. Instead, they focus on using wealth to fulfill a greater purpose, whether it’s financial freedom, generational blessing, or generosity.
How to write a wealth building vision:
1. Ask God, and wait for an answer
Habakkuk 2:1-2 provides a clear picture of how to get a vision from God:
“I will stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected.”
Then the Lord answered me and said:
‘Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.’”
Note that the prophet Habakkuk sets himself up to SEE what the Lord will say to him. God will talk to you in pictures. His voice is often not in words, but in the images and illustrations you see in your mind’s eye.
So, the first step of getting a wealth building vision is to start seeing where God wants you to go. I’ll give you a hint– it will always be bigger and better than what you can imagine on your own. So, pay attention to what you’re seeing on the inside, and be open to correction from God.
2. Determine your priorities
What’s the most important to you? How you build wealth and why you build wealth will flow from your priorities. A good rule of thumb is:
God
- Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” If your faith is the focal point, everything else will flow correctly.
Marriage (if you’re married)
- Mark 10:7-8 says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.”
- After your relationship with God, this is the most important covenant in your life. What are you and your spouse building together? Do you prioritize one another and spend time together?
Family
- What are you building for the next generation? Do you have time to be present to the most important relationships in your life?
Community
- Are you a good friend and a good neighbor? Are you valuing the divine connections God has given you for this season?
Career / Stewarding Gifts and Talents
- What is God leading you to build in this season? What is your current assignment, and how are you multiplying the gifts and talents He has given you?
Reaching your potential requires order, not perfection. By putting the first things first, you will ensure that you are building your life according to biblical priorities. You won’t get into a business venture that makes it impossible to spend quality time with your kids, or you won’t invest in stocks that go against biblical values.

3. Based on the vision and priorities, consider your purpose
Your vision, priorities, and purpose all work together. As Christians, our ultimate purpose is to love God and love others (Matthew 22:37). Our assignment for how that plays out will change throughout the seasons of our lives.
So, ask yourself the following questions:
- What do you think the Lord has asked you specifically to do?
- Who do you have to become to do all God wants you to in your life?
- How can I use the resources and relationships I have in my hand to love others and advance God’s Kingdom?
4. Write the vision simply and practically
When Habakkuk asks for a vision, God tells him to “write the vision, and make it plain on tablets.” So, once you have a wealth building vision, write it down! I like to say it this way: if it’s not in writing, it doesn’t count. Make your vision simple enough that there’s no question as to what you want to accomplish.
When I was just getting started, I hung a Triple X Factor chart in my house as a visual representation of my wealth building vision. I’d fill in my progress each month so that I’d stay on track. In the same way, do what you have to do to keep your goals top of mind. Then, exhibit faith and patience until you reach them.
Bonus Step: Faith and Patience
If you want your wealth building vision to become a reality, patience is key. Habakkuk 2:3 continues:
“This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”
Often, God will give you a vision for a future time. Your job is to take faith-filled steps toward the dream, and then to wait for God’s timing. Hebrews 6:12 says that we inherit the promises of God through faith and patience. If you work diligently and wait patiently, you will fulfill your wealth building vision!
