It’s the first month of 2019, and we are focusing on ways to make this your best year yet. I have written several posts on goal settings, and things that will help you be successful. However, for today’s post, I wanted to focus on what you may lack when setting your goals.

You can set all the best goals and New Year’s Resolutions, but if you identify with one of these pitfalls, you will likely get stuck.

Do You Lack These Critical Things?

1.) Lack of Accountability

You may have the best intentions when making a goal, and you may even know that accountability is important in achieving your goals. However, it can be really easy to lose track of this, whether you are using yourself or someone else for accountability.

I always say it’s best to have an accountability partner. This can be someone you go to the gym with every day, or a friend that checks up on you and your goals. If you can’t find an accountability partner, you can hold yourself accountable. Buy a calendar and mark off days that you practice your habits or work towards your goals. When you see how often you are either achieving or failing to achieve your goal, you will be motivated to keep working on it.

2.) Lack of Definition for Your Goals

The easiest way to not achieve your goals is to not understand them. When people ask me how to build wealth, I always ask them “how much money do you want to make?”

They will often stare back in disbelief because they don’t understand why it matters defining how much they want to make. If you want to be a millionaire, I have a teaching called “the $10,000 Millionaire”. I can teach you how to make a million dollars through real estate. However, it can be difficult to make a million dollars with a business, or at least it would take a lot of time.

Defining what you want allows for you to aim where you are going.

3.) Lack of Substance

In the same way that I ask people how much money they want to make, I will ask they why they want to make that money. Many of you will think that’s an easy question: more money = less problems. That, unfortunately, couldn’t be further from the truth.

If your only motivation is to get rich and slide through life, it’s going to be a rough road. However, if you know that you want to be wealthy so your children don’t have to worry about how to afford college, or you want to build the Kingdom of God, you will be more successful.

Business mentors and coaches now are realizing that your success is tied to your motivation behind it. Define your why!

4.) Lack of Joy

You need to enjoy the process. It won’t always be sunshine and rainbows on your journey to achieve your goals, and to be honest, once you achieve it, you will always want more.

That is why you need to find joy in what you are doing. If you aren’t happy, you are less likely to achieve your goals. Don’t force yourself to do something that you absolutely hate all of the time.
