This month, we have been talking about business development, all the way from setting goals, developing revenue streams and key activities, building leadership and customer relations. Today, I wanted to emphasize the importance of building a good team. If you run your own business, having a good team of employees around you is key. Your team represents you to your customers, they build your reputation around other companies, and most of all, they are taking care of your business. I have an Ultimate Hiring Checklist that I want to give to you. Scroll to the bottom of this post, enter your email and a link will be sent to you!

1. Hire Based on Values

Your employees have to believe in your organization if they are to last long and do effective work. This is not to say that they have to be exactly the same as you are, or believe in the same things that you do, but they have to be able to get on board with the mission. If you are a faith-based organization, then a lot of your customers will be faith-based. You have to hire employees that are comfortable with that, and who can pour into that. If your main value is honesty, you want to hire employees that will be honest with you, even when they make a mistake. Foster an environment based on your values and those of your company, and you will find the people that belong there.

Make your values very clear during a job interview. Many people will agree with whatever you put on the table because they just want to get hired, so you have to be able to discern that. Some people will be blunt with you, and say that their values don’t align with those of your company, and that’s okay. You don’t just need a team, you need the BEST team.

Don’t step over dimes to pick up pennies

2. Play to their Strengths

One of the duties of a leader is to get to know your team. Now, in a larger organization, the managers you put in place will do this, but you should always be watching your employees. If you have a team member who is doing one job, but you have come to find out has talent in a different job, don’t ignore that. People will be more dedicated and loyal when they feel like they are good at what they do. People’s strengths also tend to correlate with their passions, so don’t be afraid to play to your team’s strengths. It is okay to move your team around and grow, in fact, you should be doing that. You will get better results for it.

Before I hire anyone, I ask them to take the Myers-Briggs personality test. This tells me many things, including what the strengths and weaknesses are for their personality. ENFJ’s are great leaders, and they can truly motivate a team, however, they can overextend themselves in the workplace. ENFP’s are free spirits who are incredibly social. This means they may not work well with direction and structure, but they work great in a team. INTJ’s are incredibly capable of doing high-level work but prefer to do that alone or with like-minded people. 3. Allow Room for Growth

“to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that they may be called the trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord that he may be glorified.”

-Isaiah 61:3

I want you to see the phrase “the planting of the Lord.” In order to be the planting of the Lord, you must first dig a hole however deep is appropriate, then you place the seed into the soil, and finally, you cover the seed back up.

When that seed is in the soil, what does the soil provide for that seed? Well, the first thing it provides is warmth and nourishment. The soil provides the things that the seed needs: the minerals and moisture for the seed to be able to grow. The soil also provides resistance, which makes the seed strong.

One of the greatest things that we can do for anyone who comes to work for us is help provide for them a growth environment where they can learn and grow, where they can get knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. When they are in that in that kind of environment, they can grow and become more than they are. If they do that, then you are empowering them to bring more to your organization.
