Life is full of breaking points–pivotal moments when you can choose to grow or stay the same. Our finances are like that, too. You can stay at your current income, but there’s always an invitation to experience financial breakthrough and go to the next level.

This blog post explores the essential mindset shifts that will unlock your earning potential. Whether you’re living paycheck to paycheck or leading a multimillion-dollar organization, there is always another level of growth and generosity to step into. And more often than not, the greatest barrier isn’t external—it’s what’s happening right between our ears.

In this post, you’ll discover how to:

  • Break free from paycheck-to-paycheck living by learning what God really says about money and wealth.
  • Overcome mental blocks that keep you stuck in cycles of debt, fear, or scarcity.
  • Adopt proven mindset shifts used by both everyday believers and high-level leaders to build sustainable wealth.
  • Apply financial strategies to multiply your income, create passive revenue, and live generously.
  • Build a legacy that outlives you—not just for your children, but for the Kingdom.

The Law of Change

If you want to grow in any area of life, you must be willing to change. Building wealth is no exception. Financial breakthrough doesn’t happen by accident–it’s the result of intentional effort and key mindset shifts. And let’s be honest: no amount of hard work will get you very far if your stinking thinking stays the same!

That’s why I talk about The Law of Change first when I speak at most events. It’s an essential foundation that every other wealth building principle rests upon. The Law of Change states that in order to gain and retain something new, you must do something new. In order to build wealth, one must progressively change their mindset and actions.

I’ll say it this way: if you want your financial circumstances to change, you must be willing to change first. As Jesus said, “You can’t pour old wine into new wineskins.” (Matthew 9:17) Many people ask God for new wine, but they don’t realize that they are the ones responsible for giving Him a new wineskin. God has more of His presence, power, and plans for your finances. Are you willing to receive them?

Align Your Mind with God’s Word

The Bible is a storehouse of wisdom about how to prosper and align with God’s will for your life. Many people are unable to experience financial breakthrough because they don’t believe what the Bible says about money.

Here are three primary areas I see people struggle with on their journey to build wealth with God:

1. Lack of Trust: God is a perfect Provider. Are you trying to build wealth in your own strength, or are you submitting to Him?

Declare:

“But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by

 Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19 KJV

2. Self-Doubt: God has given you the power to get wealth, and He is no respecter of persons. If others can build wealth, you can, too.

Declare:

  • “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”

Deuteronomy 8:18

  • “God is no respecter of persons.”

Acts 10:34

3. Scarcity Mindset: You have more than enough, and you can be abundantly generous with your time, talent, and money right now. Hoarding resources stops the flow of finances and favor in your life.

Declare:

  • 1. “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
    Luke 6:38 (NIV)
  • 2. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
    Acts 20:35 (NIV)

3 Practical Mindset Shifts for Financial Breakthrough

Now that we’ve addressed the heart issues, let’s talk strategy. If you want to experience financial breakthrough, you must change the way you think about money. Through my comprehensive wealth-building framework, The Triple X Factor, I’ve identified three essential mindset shifts that will move you from just getting by to building real, lasting wealth. Without these shifts, you’ll eventually plateau.

1. From Consumer to Producer: Essential for Getting Out of Debt

Most people are trained to see money as a tool for buying what they want. But if you want to get out of debt and take control of your financial future, that mindset has to change. You must begin to see money as a tool for building.

This means embracing budgeting—not just as a chore, but as a spiritual and strategic practice. It means saying no to consumer debt and yes to delayed gratification. It means understanding the difference between assets (things that make you money) and liabilities (things that cost you money).

It’s not glamorous, but it’s powerful. Becoming a producer sets the foundation for everything else. You stop consuming for comfort, and you start producing for growth.

2. From Manager to Maker: Essential for Financial Freedom

Once you’re out of debt and have a safety net in place, it’s time to shift again—from managing money to making it multiply.

In most households, there’s a natural split: one person manages the money, and the other is focused on making more of it. The manager watches every penny (and every Amazon purchase). That my wife, Becky, in our early days. She would go through the grocery store with a calculator in hand, making sure we stayed on budget. It was exactly what we needed at the time.

But management alone won’t get you to financial freedom. You have to become a money maker. That means being willing to take calculated risks and invest in opportunities that grow your income like launching a business, purchasing real estate, or scaling a side hustle. You may even need to use leverage (yes, good debt!) to do so. It takes leverage to propel yourself out of the financial situation you were born into. That’s a big mindset shift, especially for those of us raised to fear all debt.

If you want to move beyond survival mode, you can’t stay focused on saving alone. You have to start investing with both your time and your money. Eventually, this creates passive income, gives you the option to quit your 9–5, and positions you to build both generational wealth and your capacity for generosity.

3. From Personal Legacy to Kingdom Legacy: Essential for Generational Wealth

The final mindset shift is the most important of all.

Once your debts are paid, your income is stable, and your investments are working for you, it’s easy to think the work is done. But this is just the beginning. God is inviting you to trade personal legacy for Kingdom legacy—to move from generational impact to eternal impact.

This is where so many people lose momentum. You’ve “made it,” but the enemy will whisper that it’s time to check out. He will tell you you’re too old, too tired, too irrelevant—and tempt you to settle for a comfortable life of golf and good food. (Ask me how I know. My wife and the Holy Spirit had to call me off the couch!)

However, this is the prime of your life. Your money, wisdom, and experience are needed more than ever. Maybe it’s time to launch that business or ministry that’s been stirring in your heart. Maybe you’re being called to invest in Kingdom causes, set up a foundation or donor-advised fund, or support entrepreneurs who are just getting started.

Your wealth isn’t just about you. It’s a tool for transformation.
