Change is a constant in our lives. Whether it’s forced or proactive, change can be a gift. You are constantly changing. In five years, you will be somewhere. The question is, where? In five years, you will be someone different. The question is, who? If you find yourself struggling—in any area, be it finances or relationships or careers—chances are, you need to change something. Here are a few tips on the gift of change that I have picked up along the way.

1.) Learn to ask the right questions

Facing challenges in life can be made easier when you ask the right kind of questions. Ask yourself what the cause of your troubles are. It’s easy to blame things on other people, but dig deeper and really examine your life. Hard times can be the result of your own personal choices and behavior, someone else’s choices and behavior, an age transition, different social and economic eras, or simply just living in an imperfect world. Stuff really does just happen sometimes. The point is, ask yourself these questions to find the root of your problems, and then give yourself the gift of change! Change is the only way to make your life different.

2.) Change the environment

Several years ago, we moved from Louisiana to Colorado. During that move, I experienced how much of a critical role our environment plays in personal success. For one thing, when we were unpacking the moving truck, I didn’t sweat a drop! However, when I had packed the truck a few days earlier in Louisiana, I was drenched by the time I had finished! Another joyful discovery we made was the absence of roaches; back in Louisiana, roaches are abundant! I did a little research and to my delight, discovered that roaches are unable to live in Colorado’s environment! Changing your environment can dramatically impact your success.

3.) Change your mental environment

I believe that what we believe matters. When you are choosing to change, the first thing you need to do is tell yourself “I can swallow this”. Change can be scary and hard, but it can also be a gift, as we discussed. Change in spite of your fear, so that you can start moving on. When you focus on the positive outcomes change can have, you begin to shift your focus and realize change can be a gift. When I changed the physical environment of my family, I experienced some positive results. Who wouldn’t love a roach-free climate? I had to change my mental environment as well, so instead of stressing over all the problems that naturally arise when relocation occurs, I instead was able to focus on the exciting new chapter that was taking place in my family’s life.

Change can be a gift. If you feel you need to change your life as the new year approaches, do this for yourself, and for your family! What are you planning to change in the new year?
