Thanksgiving just passed, and I hope you had a happy holiday weekend! I know that the holidays can be hard when it comes to food and body image, which isn’t something I talk a lot about on here. However, I know many people go on crazy diets during this time of the year or for the new year. Today, I wanted to teach you how presenting your body can change everything.

What you do with your body affects how you feel and what you believe. When it comes to any behavior – positive or negative – we have a tendency to surrender to what our body wants. This is not what the Bible tells us to do. Romans 12:1-2 tells us to present our bodies as living sacrifices to God. Present literally means to offer your body to God. It means that you yield all your physiological feelings and behaviors to Him.

Most of us are willing to do this as long as the things we need to present aren’t significant. To present our bodies the way the Romans passage describes, sometimes we are going to have to drag ourselves by the arm across the floor! What does presenting your body have to do with change? Everything! Because if you change what you do with your body, you can change the way you feel.

How Presenting Your Body Changes Everything

Presenting Your Body Physically

When we begin to physically present our bodies, seeking to make changes in areas such as eating, smoking . and drinking, we run into tremendous emotional resistance. Just try to help a dieter, a chain smoker, or an alcoholic who does not want help!

First of all, the person must realize there’s a problem. Second, the person must want to be free. The person’s body is addicted to nicotine, alcohol, or the abuse and misuse of food. Yet, those patterns can be broken if the individual will cooperate.

To experience change, the individual must stop presenting his or her body to the problem and start presenting it to the answer.

Presenting Your Body in Every Way

We need to present our bodies unto the Lord in every way – through our posture, our facial expressions, our breathing, our gestures, and even our tone of voice.

Have you ever been around a person who has offended you? Your voice tenses up, Your muscles tighten and your facial expression changes. But you can change your reaction to that person by changing what you do with your body.

Take a deep breath, relax your jaw, and your overall demeanor will begin to change.

Push Past Discomfort

Whenever you enter a season of change in any area of your life, it gets uncomfortable. I want you to do an exercise with me. Clasp your hands together in front of you with your fingers interlocked. Notice which thumb is on top. Now, cross your thumbs and put the other one on top. Does it feel uncomfortable to you? You’ve mad a change to your body isn’t used to.

When you start to change your posture, your tonal patterns, or your facial expressions, it’s uncomfortable at first. It feels like having the wrong thumb on top.

What’s comfortable isn’t always good. Push past the discomfort you are feeling and enter into change.
