With the bundles of evergreen trees fastened onto car rooftops and the poinsettias adorning every house window, I can officially say that we’ve entered into the Holiday season! Along with all the gift-giving and decorations that make Christmas so festive comes the real meaning of the season – the spirit of giving.

This year, the holidays may look very different for many of us. It’s easy to get caught up in what we’re lacking and who we’re missing, but let’s not forget the story of the One who brought us all of this in the first place. God has worked so hard to grow generosity in our hearts. If it weren’t for God’s generosity, we wouldn’t be here. God has planted a seed of generosity in each one of us, we just have to place it in good soil and continue to water it. If you sow generosity, you will reap generosity!

As advent is beginning, I encourage you to harness this feeling and put your generosity into action through your church and local community. However, I know that the spirit of giving can and should go way beyond just a season. If you make giving a habit in your life, you will be amazed by the impact and change you can yield in other’s lives.

How to Foster the Spirit of Giving This Holiday Season

1. Monetary Giving

You don’t have to be a millionaire to give. In fact, small donations can go a long way. Consider giving to a charity or an organization that is meaningful to you. This might be the Mathew 25: Ministries disaster relief organization that provides national and international humanitarian aid or Food for the Poor that focuses on hunger relief efforts. Money is a powerful tool and because of this, God expects us to be generous and giving with our material wealth.

If you’re searching for an opportunity to give, there might be one closer than you think! Here at WealthBuilders, our monthly financial partners are the ones who empower us to go overseas and provide our training. Monthly partners are the ones who enable us to provide needed infrastructure, produce education materials, send us to our sites, and sponsor conferences worldwide. 2. Giving of Time

If you’re worried about not having the funds to help someone else this Christmas season, consider giving your time instead. Some of the best gifts aren’t actually “things.” Often times, we look at strangers as the ones who are in the greatest need of our help. We overlook the fact that many of the people who are struggling are right here in our communities. They’re sometimes even our family, friends, and neighbors.

Consider organizing a food drive at work for a family in need. Or, try volunteering at a shelter, or even offering to babysit for a family who is overwhelmed this season. A small amount of your time can be very impactful for a family in need. You can even pay a visit to a nursing home and brighten the day of those who are often lonely. There are many different ways you can use your time to help others. Even just sending warm holiday blessings can help to improve someone’s day!

3. Small Acts of Kindness

The little acts of kindness are the ones that mean the most. For example, I remember just the other day I was having a really rough morning. While I was walking with my head down, someone stopped me just to say good morning. It was a small gesture, but it turned my whole day around. Giving doesn’t have to be over the top, sometimes it just means sharing a smile with someone else. Next time it snows, offer to shovel your neighbor’s driveway. On your next visit to the grocery store, buy a bag full of groceries and leave it at someone’s doorstep. Pay for a stranger’s lunch at a restaurant. Leave a friendly note for your coworker to find the next morning, or give your relatives a call. You never know who’s day you can change with a random act of kindness!

I’ve given you a lot of ideas on how to get in the spirit of giving this holiday season. Imagine if each person in the world did one thing to help others this season? The world would be overflowing with blessings!
