Often when we are on a change journey, whether it was forced or chosen, it can be hard to stay motivated. We often face resistance to change, and our natural response is to give up. However, you have to keep pushing.
When test pilot Chuch Yeager described his experience breaking through the sound barrier, he said he had no idea what to expect. His plane began to vibrate violently, and he feared that it might even explode. Rather than throttle back the engines, however, he increased his speed and found that his rise suddenly became incredibly smooth and quiet.
You have to stay motivated in order to completely change. In today’s blog, I will outline some techniques that you can use so you can stay strong!
How to Stay Motivated During Change
1. Remember Your “Why”
When you have decided that something in your life needs to change, you will always have a reason why. If you need to stay motivated, remember what the reason is. You could want to get in better shape in order to run around with your child, or finally go back to college to excel in your career.
When you begin your change journey, really think about why you’re doing it, and write it down! Put it somewhere you will see it daily, and remind yourself of it when you don’t feel motivated.
2. Find an Accountability Partner
One of the defining parts of success is to be accountable. This is much easier when you have someone to keep track of where you are at. I encourage you to find someone you trust who can give you some tough love. Choose someone that will keep you motivated, even on your bad days.
It is essential that this person checks in on a regular basis. Whether it is every day or every week, they have to be as committed to your accountability and change as you are. My wife Becky is a fantastic accountability partner. She can whip me back into shape, but she also gives me the love and support I need during a season of change.
3. Use Your Imagination
First, I want you to imagine the pain of staying the same. If you give up on your change journey, your life will go back to the way it was before. Do you really want that? The act of imagining what your life would look like without change can be enough to keep you motivated.
Next, I want you to imagine the gains you will have in your life if you complete your change journey. How much happier will you be? What will have been added to your life? How will you be different? Imagine these things daily and use the end goal to motivate yourself.
4. Reward Yourself
This is my favorite tip. Find some way to reward yourself when you hit a milestone on your journey, or once your change has been completely made. It can be something related to the change like if you want to lose weight, you can buy yourself a really nice pair of running shoes. If you are going through a divorce, take yourself out on a date!
Find something that motivates you to finish changing. It is a hard journey, but I know you can do it! This encouragement from yourself will help you along the way.
