How do you grow through resistance? Recently, the WealthBuilders team and I had the privilege of hosting our Quick Start event for our current family of real estate and investment coaching clients. It was a great afternoon of getting to know one another and setting intentional goals for the year to come. I shared a word with them that I am eager to share with you today.

What is the Mind of Christ?

1 Corinthians 2:9-11 (ESV) says this: “But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

That gets me excited! God has a divine treasure chest of opportunities and connections for those of us who know him- beyond what we have imagined. God wants to reveal so much to you in this season if you abide in Him. Paul continues:

“For who knows a person’s thoughts except for the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual” (1 Cor 2:11-13 ESV).

Now I’ve made a lot of mistakes, and many of them came early in my life because I didn’t grasp this scripture right here. I didn’t always take the time to slow down and listen to what the Holy Spirit told me about certain decisions throughout my wealth-building journey. What a tragedy that is! Not even because I missed out on certain monetary endeavors, but because I missed out on the joy that only comes when you intentionally partner with God. After all, He has freely given us the most beautiful gift of all— His Spirit. We have access to God’s thoughts. Just sit with that fact. The passage goes on to say, “We have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16). Why would we not ask Him his opinion on matters related to money? Not only does He have an opinion, but He has the wisdom we so desperately need.

How to Exercise Discernment

Once I began to get this, it saved me in a lot of situations. One was this apartment complex that I was set on buying. I ran all of the numbers, researched the municipalities, talked to the right people, and it looked like it was going to be a real money maker. So much so that I was going to pay cash for the whole thing! I stood in front of the property the day before I was going to sign the contract. I’ll never forget— the Holy Spirit specifically spoke to me, “Don’t do it.”

Now, I’m not always that sensitive to the Holy Spirit, but the voice was crystal clear during this moment. As you get in the game, your discernment will mature with prayer and supplication. You may not know why God says no at the moment, but oftentimes the reason is revealed later on. In the case of my apartment complex story, I found out 6 months later. That complex went through eminent domain. (This is the government’s right to expropriate private property for public use with some compensation). I checked all my boxes before. I talked to the right people and did all the necessary research. From the facts I had access to, there was no reason I shouldn’t have made that deal. But God knew something I didn’t. The government only gave the person who did end up buying the property half of his money back. The point is, I would’ve lost half of my cash had I gone through with that deal.

Grow through Resistance

You have to move in faith— don’t let analysis paralysis freeze your breakthrough— but remember that the voice of the Holy Spirit is so important. Always give Him permission to change your course. However, it is crucial that we don’t mistake the voice of the Holy Spirit with the voice of our own fear. Sometimes fear will come up in your natural person. Fear will tell you not to take a step when you should actually grow through resistance. Scripture clearly tells us, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV)

I was sweating, shaking, and absolutely terrified the first time I made a big investment. We all have points of resistance that we have to grow through as we let the Holy Spirit lead and guide us. A lot of people mistake these feelings of resistance for the Holy Spirit when really it’s just the limitations of their flesh. It’s their mind that hasn’t been renewed that’s holding them back. You can change without growing (because you can change for the negative). But you can’t grow without changing.

Becky, myself, and the WealthBuilders team will be praying that limitations fall away from you as you grow in faith. Remember, God wants a rich and dynamic relationship with you. Changing for His purposes is always worth the risk.
