What if I told you there is perfect timing for every event and season in your life? Psalm 139:16 says, “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

We can align with and submit to God’s timing or live oblivious to what He wants to do in our lives and the lives around us. A key to living in God’s timing is preparation. When you prepare and are faithful in your current season, God will promote you to the next thing in His perfect timing. With God, every season is pregnant with purpose!

There’s a lot to unpack there, so what is biblical preparation, and how can we walk in it?

What is Biblical Preparation?

The regular definition of preparation is “ the action or process of making something ready for use, service, or getting ready for some occasion, test, or duty.” In the world, preparation often looks like preparing for something we choose. It can be stressful.

On the other hand, biblical preparation starts with praying for God’s timing or will and adjusting your actions accordingly. It is marked by peace.

Many Christians do not prepare because they want to be led by the Holy Spirit. This is a good intention, but it is based on a misunderstanding. Preparation creates order, and order creates focus. When you are focused and free of distraction, you will be able to recognize when the Holy Spirit is trying to show you something.

When you prepare, you create the space and systems to be present with God by minimizing distractions and not being in a hurry. Just think about attending a church service where nobody prepared – there was no worship team, preacher, or plan. The Spirit of God can move in any environment, but it would inevitably take some time for people to figure out what to do!

How to Prepare

You need two things to prepare well– the proper time and procedure. Ecclesiastes 8:5-6 speaks directly to this:

“Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure. For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery.” Ecclesiastes 8:5-6 NIV

The rest of this blog will dive into these two tenets of biblical preparation. You will learn how preparation paves the way for promotion into your next season.

1. The Proper Time

When we sync with God’s timing, He brings divine connections and kairos moments to our lives. Three indicators that you are walking in the proper timing are:

1. You feel the peace and presence of God.

2. You have confirmation from trusted people.

3. You are experiencing divine connections and kairos moments.

Faith and Patience

Living in God’s timing requires patience! Often, we want to move on when God is still working on us. You cannot abandon the baby before it is born. Hebrews 6:12 (NKJV) says,

“And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

Learn to discern the times and seasons. That will allow you to function with diligent patience. Through faith and patience, you will inherit the promises of God!

Boundaries

God helps us with patience. At any given time, He places certain boundaries on your life to help you stay in the season. 2 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV) says, “We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us.”

A person who understands the proper time is able to endure limitations and frustrations. They know that God is sharpening their character and helping them grow in faithfulness, even when it’s hard. Remember, “there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery.” Your boundaries have fallen in pleasant places, and the Lord knows what He is doing! In the right time, He will redeem all things.

Diligence

When you exercise faith and patience and live within God-given boundaries, you will grow in diligence. In other words, you will know how to stay in your season until God moves you into the next one. Proverbs 12:27 (AMP) says, “The lazy man does not catch and roast his prey, But the precious possession of a [wise] man is diligence [because he recognizes opportunities and seizes them].”

Understanding the proper time will help you recognize the opportunities God has placed in your current season. Then, you can seize those opportunities and maximize the moment with the proper procedure.

2. The Proper Procedure

I always ask people, “What do you need to become in order to do all that God is leading you to do?” Maybe you need to become more confident, peaceful, or knowledgeable in finance. Whatever your “what” is, implementing the proper procedure is critical to attaining it.

You are not going to drift to the top of the mountain. In other words, excellence is not automatic–it is cultivated through intentional procedures in the proper seasons. Every good thing in your life is upstream.

Invest in Yourself

“Pay close attention to yourself [concentrate on your personal development] and to your teaching; persevere in these things [hold to them], for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.” 1 Timothy 4:16 AMP

I always say that the first thing you should invest in is yourself. Concentrate on your personal development! You don’t know what you don’t know. As you learn, you will discover the right questions to ask, and the right questions will lead you to the proper procedure.

For example, when it comes to real estate, a combination of the proper time and proper procedure involves understanding the market and when it is a good time to buy. You must understand what makes a good investment, how to negotiate, and have the right team to help you secure it. The Holy Spirit will guide you to understand your financial season so you will know whether He is leading you to invest (and how much he wants you to invest).

Focus

There are so many scriptures that have to do with focus. The Bible expresses the importance of getting revelation and staying focused on God’s plans and purposes for our lives.

Proverbs 4:25-26 (NLT) says, “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.”

1 Corinthians 9:26 says, “Therefore I do not run uncertainly (without definite aim). I do not box like one beating the air and striking without an adversary.”

To live in biblical preparation and promotion, you need to have a goal and focus to get there. Once you know the proper time and procedure, refuse to live half-heartedly. Run confidently and know that God will promote you at the right time. For “Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much” and “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south, But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. (Luke 16:10 BSB, Psalm 75:6-7 KJV)
