I have started many businesses over the years, and marketing has changed drastically. I remember my first business was a carpet cleaning business. This was before industrial carpet cleaners were common in hardware stores, which was my value proposition. I had equipment that others typically couldn’t get. The way I marketed my services was by posting flyers across neighborhoods and walking door to door. Now, if you tried that strategy, it would likely be a waste of time.

In today’s blog post, I am going to go over some of the most successful marketing strategies that I have tried and tested. At the end of each strategy, I will give you an action step to take these ideas from theory to reality.

The Most Effective Marketing Strategies for Businesses

1. Build Your Email List

This should be priority number one when you are building a marketing strategy for your business. Email lists are where people make the majority of their sales, even the experts. The reason email marketing is so successful is because you start to build a relationship with your reader. You provide them with value, and they will begin to trust your expertise. Cold-call sales are hard to make, but if your customer knows you provide insights and knowledge, they are more likely to purchase from your business, whatever it is.

Action step: Provide free content. This is the best way to show your expertise and also get people interested in what you have to say. What are you an expert in, or what do you want people to know you for? Begin by filming even just a short video with some unique tips and send it out to people.

2. Know Your Audience

When you are marketing anything, you have to know who you are selling to. This matters in the voice you use while writing, and the products you offer. If you haven’t yet, start building your avatar. This is the ideal person you want in your audience. Get down into the details! What do they do for a living? How old are they? What do they want most in life? The only way you can successfully connect with your audience is if you know who you are talking to.

3. Show Up

This can be done in many ways, but you want to make sure you are always somewhere in your customers’ minds. I send out weekly emails with blog posts to keep my email list warm, and to continue to provide value. Others might utilize social media every day to connect to their followers. You just don’t want them to forget about you, so make an effort to be there for your customers.

Action step: Show up today, no matter how many followers or subscribers you have. Keep providing value consistently, and it will pay off.
