Wealth building is simple, but that does not mean it’s easy. The principles you need to know and the steps you need to take to get your financial life in order are not rocket science. You know what works and what doesn’t. However, putting the principles into practice and taking the steps are the difficult part. You have to start. You have to understand the wealth building is not easy – but it is worth it.

It takes a lot of time, energy, and effort. And it requires that you position yourself correctly. What do I mean by that? Well, you need to adopt some lifestyle positions, mindsets, and attitudes in order to be successful.

Here are five positions you need to take if you want to build lasting wealth:

1. Develop the Right Attitude

Having the wrong attitude can hinder you financially because, let’s face it, your attitude can make or break your financial future. Either your attitude will propel you towards success or drag you down in defeat.

It might be helpful to think about what an attitude is. An attitude is what you believe deep down. Your attitude toward yourself may be shameful, neglectful, or positive. Similarly, your attitude about the world can be hopeful or defeated. Your attitudes are determined by your belief system – so, what you believe about something will usually determine how you feel about it.

What does this have to do with building wealth? Well, you have to develop the right attitude when it comes to your finances! Foster a positive, hopeful mindset and allow yourself to imagine success.

2. Accept Personal Responsibility

Accepting personal responsibility is the highest form of human maturity. Think about it – you are where you are largely due to the choices you have made. Of course you can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can control your response (at least).

This means that YOU alone are responsible for changing your financial circumstances! Be willing to give up your excuses. Set a direction for your life and chase it down. Be in control and accept the responsibility for your choices.

3. Expect the Best

What are your expectations related to wealth? Are they positive or negative? You can’t have an attitude of expecting the best and be depressed. Rather, expecting the best is as simple as making a decision to see your future in a positive light.

This sounds easy, but unfortunately it’s not. The reason most people do not expect the best is that they’ve been disappointed one too many times. Disappointing things happen to all of us, but we can’t allow those experiences to cause us to hide our heads in the sand. Be willing to keep hoping.

4. Be Willing to Be Creative

Maybe you feel stuck or trapped in your current financial situation. You may have a bad habit that you think you’ll never be able to break. You also may think, “I’m never going to change.” Well, you just have to be creative! No matter where you are right now, there is some sort of strategy that will help you move forward.

You probably have a strong tendency to doubt your own creativity, especially when you feel stuck in your current situation. But there is always a way to get where you need to go.

5. Have Confidence to Design Your Future

Finally, you need to be willing to call the shots in your life. You have to be willing to pick up the pen and compose an ending to your own story. Have you ever asked yourself, “What’s important to me?” You may be living your life for someone else without realizing it. It’s time to live your life for you and for God – that’s it.

To design your own future, you have to identify your own priorities and values. Determine which things are most meaningful to you. And don’t allow yourself to be limited by what other people think. Remember, be willing to be creative.

Here’s the honest truth: you can either stay stuck or you can grow. And if you aren’t moving forward, you can count on the fact that you’ll start to drift backward soon. I encourage you to work on these five attitudes and mindset shifts. Take responsibility and position yourself to build lasting wealth!
