Building wealth requires planning. If you venture into entrepreneurship, you need a business plan. To leave a legacy to the next generation, you need an estate plan. To reach financial freedom, you will need a financial plan or planner. But what about when it comes to building wealth God’s way?
Many people think planning is the opposite of faith, but that could not be further from the truth. Proverbs 16 is full of rich insight into how faith and intentional action combine to fulfill God’s plans for you. In this blog, we are going to hone in on Proverbs 16:9:
“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9, NKJV

3 Facts About God’s Plans for You
1. God’s Plans are Higher Than Your Plans
God’s plans for you will always fit into His will for creation. You may have heard it said that if every bride had a sunny wedding day, every farmer would have a terrible harvest. That is just one way of thinking about how God orchestrates the universe according to His perfect wisdom. As we can see in Proverbs 16:9, people make plans, but God has the final say. Isaiah 55:8-9 (CEB) says,
“My plans aren’t your plans,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
Just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my plans than your plans.”
So, if you want to know more about God’s plans, start with scripture (otherwise known as the revealed will of God). You will learn about corporate activities that God calls every Christian to. Some things that may come to mind are loving God, loving our neighbors, making disciples, and serving others through our work. However, God also has a specific pathway for you to embody those goals. That’s where your plans come into play!
2. God’s Plans Involve Your Plans
God is sovereign, but that does not mean we sit on the sidelines. We have an active part to play in the dreaming and doing process. We get to co-labor with God.
Because of His love for you, God intentionally designed a customized plan for your life. The longer you follow it, the more you will come to understand that it is better than anything you could imagine on your own.
Hebrews 12:2 (TLB) says, “Let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us.” Evidently, God has a race for everyone, but everyone’s race is unique. God often reveals His race for your life through the dreams and desires He places on your heart.
Proverbs 16 encourages planning, noting in verse one that “The preparations of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.” Planning is your possession–don’t forsake it! Verse three says, “Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established.” God’s plans involve your plans– that’s how He designed them. He wants to partner with you every day as you plan, and in due time, He will refine and establish your thoughts.

3. God’s Plans Are Progressive
We like to plan out the whole journey, or way, at once, but that’s not how it works with God. Often, God leads us to the next step or half step we need to take. Once you realize that, life gets a lot less anxious. You don’t have to have it all figured out! Yes, get a vision, and yes, make a plan, but let God adjust you every day.
I love how the Amplified Version says Proverbs 16 9: “A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the LORD directs his steps and establishes them.”
Do you ever wonder why God doesn’t give us the whole blueprint at once? For one, going step by step requires faith. Faith builds trust, and trust builds relationships. It is natural to plan your way; I’d say it’s in the very fabric of how God designed our minds. However, He also designed you for a relationship with Him. As you journey through life, let go of control and let God direct your steps.
